LAMU HOLDS 2ND ANNUAL FOOD FESTIVAL
PRESS RELEASE: APRIL 5TH, 2016 – LAMU TOWN
In its growing image as the “island of festivals”, the County Government of Lamu will be holding the second annual Lamu Food Festival from 15th to 17th April, 2016 at Lamu Island. The weekend long event will combine both cultural and culinary activities to include a street food bazaar, food expo, food races and competitions, film feast, tours, seminar, cooking classes, and much more.
Lamu Island is the second biggest island within Lamu County, which is designated as UNESCO World Heritage Site. One of its main attractions leading to this designation is its well-preserved traditional cuisine. Lamu was once the most important trade centre in East Africa before its decline. As such, Asian and Arab spices and ingredients influence the popular traditional Swahili Cuisine. The cuisine uses fresh foods from the island including coconut and tamarind steeped in aromatic spices like cardamom, cinnamon, cumin and black pepper.
Today, Lamu remains an important tourist spot for this and many other reasons which have led the county to host numerous festivals including the world popular Lamu Cultural Festival and Maulid Festival. This has grown its reputation as the “Island of Festivals”.
The Food Festival is expected to attract an audience with an interest in a rich culinary experience including foodies, food bloggers, and other tourists interested in the Lamu cuisine. It is a family-oriented, community-centered event, while companies and food industry investors will attend to promote their products or services at the event.
While the most well known cuisine in Lamu is the Swahili cuisine, this festival will expose and celebrate all cuisines around and explore all aspects of the food industry in Lamu from farming, fishing, into processing and the hotel and restaurants industry. This will allow investors to both enjoy the cultural delicacies while exploring the potential of investing in the food industry in Lamu.
In addition to the County Government of Lamu, partners of include: The National Museums of Kenya, Lamu Tourism Association, Kenya Red Cross, among many others.
