Rebirth of Lamu
The County Government of Lamu and the National museums of Kenya is undertaking rehabilitation of the Lamu World heritage Site seafront Rehabilitation Project , which includes: painting and rehabilitation of buildings, signage of sites, and cleaning up of the seafront through community collaboration.
The aim of activity is to improve the visual aesthetic of the Lamu Town seafront in order to create a suitable culture and tourism environment. The activity is meant to improve the hygiene and sanitation of Lamu seafront, rehabilitate key monuments on the seafront, cleanup and raise awareness on the important of the seafront visual aesthetics.
The outcome of the undertaking is expected to be a new visible entry way for Lamu Town with clear signage and interpretation of sites in Lamu, town and garbage free seafront and community participation in preserving the heritage site, especially youth.
The event is also well timed to the opening of a new tourism season in July and the lifting of the ravel advisory for Lamu Island by France Last month. This indicates a positive and optimistic new future for Lamu.
