Lamu archipelago is rich of valuable natural resources, to which they give it an attracting and amazing beauty. There are four islands laid in the Indian Ocean in the northern coast of Kenya i.e. Lamu, Pate, Manda, and Kiwayu. The islands are surrounded by an evergreen forest, mangrove forest which covers almost 67% of the mangrove forest in Kenya.

The salt-tolerant trees provide a shoreline beautification with an amazing structure to enjoy viewing. The views can be experienced when sailing along the narrow roots to the eastern part of Lamu archipelago. The canopies nest different types of beautiful birds and the deep, wide-spread roots with coral reefs offer homes and hiding places for fish species like crabs. Mostly fishermen depend on the mangrove for fishing since they are fish breeding grounds. Mangrove in Lamu is a source of income where residents depend on.

Unlike other trees, mangroves are pest-free to which they are used in the construction of the traditional boats in Lamu, where water is the main source of transport, boats made of the mangrove trees are used in ferrying peoples and cargoes around the archipelago.

Most buildings in Lamu are in the traditional form since it’s a heritage site. The ceilings of the buildings are made of the mangrove trees.

Launching Of The 9 KM Hindi-Magogoni Road

Yesterday,11/01/2018, H.E. Governor Fahim Yasin Twaha, officially launched the 9km Hindi-Magogoni road. The project is funded by Fuel Levy funds through the County Government of Lamu. The project is to construct and do maintenance works to all rural road of Lamu County.


During the occasion that was attended by National and County Government officials, Governor Fahim said that Lamu County will no longer face the crisis of water shortage, since there are investors who re willing to install Distillation Plant to recycle salt water. And also pipes Will be connected at Tana River and supply water to Lamu. He also promised Hindi residents Land surveying will be done and each will have his title deed in hand.


Since Lamu County is developing with great projects like the LAPSSET, job opportunities will be available where Governor urged Youths to make use of the polytechnic in acquiring skill so that to benefit from the projects.

The County Government, through the Department of ICT, has launched a Short Message Service platform with the aim of promoting exchange of information between the county government and the residents. Residents will be able to enquire on any county government undertaking or report any incidents afflicting them just through a short text message.

The SMS platform promotes transparency, reduces complaints caused by lack of information, and enables the citizens to communicate to the county government in case of emergencies. This is a project set to have far-reaching outcomes addressing information needs of county residents besides promoting public participation in policy and decision making processes.

The activities mostly take up on March and November.

Lamu: An Emerging Sports Safaris Destination

Some 265km from Mombasa just off Kenya’s northern coast, Lamu is a tropical archipelago that comprises a string of enchanting Indian Ocean islands such as Lamu, Pate, Manda and Kiwayu. Lamu, a Unesco World Heritage Site since 2001, is the largest town in the archipelago. The area contains several sites of historical and archaeological significance including Shanga, Manda and Takwa. These sites make for great Lamu safari that offers intriguing insight into the Swahili culture that dates back 700 years.

Compared to the busier and crowded southern and central parts of the Kenyan coast, Lamu offers more restful holidays away from the hustle and bustle of the modern world. Great beaches, blazing coral reefs, outstanding cuisine and a fascinating culture are some of the highlights of Lamu. The town that was founded in the 14th Century as a Swahili trading centre and settlement has a rich history and cultural heritage that is commemorated during the Annual Lamu Cultural Festival held every November.

The absence of vehicles on the streets of Lamu and the presence of donkeys within the town are some of the things that will strike you during your trip to Lamu. Donkeys are the main mode of transport within the town as the streets of Lamu are not wide enough to accommodate vehicles. The narrow streets block sun rays thereby keeping the town cool.

 

Scuba diving, snorkelling (best undertaken between November and March) are among the major attractions of Lamu safari. The archipelago is particularly popular globally for its deep sea-fishing, with Kiwayu Island featuring among the world’s 10 best diving sites.

 

Deep-sea fishing is quickly giving Lamu a reputation as one of the top destinations for African sports safaris. Deep-sea fishing is best undertaken from October through April and some of the fish caught include Kingfish, Wahoo, Tuna, Sailfish, Barracuda and Marlin. Lamu is also gaining popularity as a destination for African Sports Safaris thanks to the annual dhow and donkey racing events. The donkey race, which is held every June, attracts many competitors each eyeing a much coveted title. The race is an important event for both local and international supporters.

The best time to visit Lamu is between January and March when snorkeling is ideal.
The archipelago is best reached by air from Nairobi, Mombasa, Malindi and Diani Beach. There are daily scheduled flights to and from these destinations. An airstrip located on Manda Island serves Lamu town and can also service private charters.

Na kwa upande wake waziri Munywa amempongeza daktari Kombo kwa bidii yake na kusema kuwa bado atashirikiana naye ili kusaidia watu wa Lamu na kuahidi kuwa ataboresha huduma katika hospitali hiyo.
Hafla hiyo imehudhuriwa na wafanyikazi na wakuu wa idara mbali mbali za afya pamoja na wakaazi wa Lamu.

Lamu Youth Vocational Training Centre Gets Funded

Tuesday 24/10/2017, the Aga Khan Foundation, through funding from the European Union has officially handed over equipment to the six Lamu Vocational training centres at Lamu Youth Vocational Training Centre.


The project have been implemented after a survey conducted by the Aga khan foundation on Vocational centres where lack of adequate equipment and materials was found being a challenge to the extent that the delivery of quality employable skills to youth was extensively compromised.


The equipment: Tailoring, computing and sport items cost Ksh 3million, these will enhance better quality of training. According to Mr. Atrash Mohammed, the Project Manager for coast region,

“God willing, November or Early December we will donate more equipment for masonry, carpentry, electrical and mechanical engineering costing Ksh 5 million for Lamu and Garissa County.”


220 Lamu County Government and GIZ sponsored students from Lamu Vocational training centre who pursued different fields graduated. During the ceremony, Mr Atrash told the student that after finalizing there courses they should be able to practice their skills and they will be connected to business entities and companies for their internship program where ksh 3 million will be used for the industries that the student will be attached.
The ceremony was attended by the Deputy Governor Abdulhakim Bwana, Mkomani ward administrator Yahya Ahmed, CO Education Hafswa Diffin, Aga Khan Foundation Officials and other County Government officials.


In his speech the Deputy Governor urged the beneficiaries to be thankful for the donors for the sacrifices. He also urged the trainers to provide specific and unique trainings concerning the culture and heritage of Lamu which will be employable skills and insisted the graduates to use their skills to acquire their living.

Gavana katika hotuba yake alisisitiza kuweko kwa amani katika maregeleo ya uchaguzi wa urais utakaofanyika 26/Oct/2017. Vilevile aliwaomba wananchi wa Lamu wajitokeze kupiga kura kwa wingi na kwa amani ifikapo siku hiyo. Pia alisistiza watu wampigie kura Mheshimiwa Uhuru Kenyatta ili aweze kutekeleza na kumalizia miradi iliyokuwa imeanzishwa.
