Lamu County Government has been feted for promoting equality and inclusion of special interest groups.

Lamu was feted alongside 80 other equality champions; individuals, institutions and counties who received certificates and commemorative plaques during the inaugural Usawa Awards ceremony by the National Gender and Equality Commission’s (NGEC) at the Kenya School of Government.

Commission’s Chairperson Dr. Joyce Mutinda said the winners from across the country had made tremendous efforts in championing gender equality and inclusion in the country and deserved commendations.

The County Government of Lamu has made great strides in promoting equality and inclusion of special interest groups including empowerment through Education for all in Lamu under the Scholarship and Bursary programs and access to safe and clean water under the ongoing transformational ‘Mai Mekoni’ project.

It is also in the process of issuing Grants to Youth, Women and People Living with Disabilities (vetting done and disbursement to commence soon) and carrying out land reforms through land ownership; Financing universal health cover to over 20,000 families; subsidized mechanization of farms to promote food security and issuance of certified seeds among others .
