The County Government of Lamu has successfully concluded a series of public participation forums aimed at restoring Lake Kenyatta, one of the key freshwater resources in Lamu West, ahead of the upcoming planting exercise.

The final forum was held for residents of the Lake Amu area in Mpeketoni, marking the conclusion of the community engagement phase of the restoration initiative.

The CECM for Climate Change, ICT, Public Participation and E-Government Aisha Shariffr and Chief Off, Mohamed Dirie, led the public awareness session, emphasizing the importance of community involvement in restoring the lake.

The meetings were organized to create awareness among residents about the ongoing restoration efforts and to gather community views on sustainable solutions for reviving the lake.

The forums aimed to actively engage residents and stakeholders in discussions on practical and sustainable approaches to restore the lake and protect its ecosystem.

Through a partnership with the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF), Lamu County has embarked on a journey to restore Lake Kenyatta, which has experienced significant drying over the years.

The decline of the lake has largely been attributed to human activities that have interfered with natural water channels and surrounding ecosystems.

The ongoing engagements are also expected to provide a clear way forward on how Nature-based Solutions can be integrated into the lake restoration initiative to enhance conservation and environmental sustainability.

The Parliamentary Energy Committee on Wednesday paid a courtesy call to Lamu Governor Issa Timamy as part of ongoing public participation on proposed changes to the national oil development plan. The meeting was held ahead of a scheduled public forum with residents at the Mokowe Maritime Centre, where the Committee is expected to engage citizens directly.

‎The engagement brought together Members of the Committee and the County Executive to discuss key issues affecting Lamu County, with a major focus on collecting citizens’ views on the proposed re-routing of the LAPSSET crude oil pipeline from the original Lokichar–Lamu corridor to an alternative route terminating in Mombasa.

‎Governor Timamy emphasized that Lamu’s port development must be supported by critical infrastructure, noting that it is not viable to have a functional port without an oil pipeline and a refinery. He stated that there are already investors willing to invest in Lamu, provided an oil pipeline is established.

‎The Governor further reiterated that Lamu Port is envisioned as a major transshipment hub serving regional and international markets, and called for meaningful public participation to safeguard the county’s long-term economic interests.

The County Government of Lamu, through the Department of Finance, Budget, Strategy and Economic Planning, has successfully concluded public participation forums on the County Annual Development Plan (CADP) across the county.

In the latest sessions held in Witu ward, residents actively voiced their priorities for projects to be included in the 2026/2027 financial year.

Wananchi emphasized key areas they want addressed, highlighting pressing needs for their communities.

They also expressed appreciation to the county government, noting that several of their past proposals have been taken into account and implemented in previous and this financial years.

The forums are part of the county’s constitutional obligation to involve citizens in decision making, ensuring that development is guided by the people’s needs and aspirations.
