Equipped with three ginning machines, the plant will operate on a 24-hour cycle and has already created employment opportunities for over 150 youths.

Speaking during the launch, cooperative members welcomed the project but appealed to the governor to further enhance the facility’s capacity by adding more machines to improve efficiency and meet growing demand. In response, Governor Timamy assured them that his administration will procure three additional machines to support the initiative. Lamu County remains a key player in Kenya’s cotton sector, producing approximately 60 percent of the country’s cotton.

The County Executive Committee Member (CECM) for Agriculture urged farmers to increase production, promising better prices compared to last year. He also assured them of the county government’s commitment to supply high-yield cotton seeds to enhance productivity.

Governor Timamy reiterated his administration’s commitment to transforming Lamu through industrial growth, revealing plans to establish more agro-processing industries, including bixa, coconut, fruit, and cashew nut factories.

He further assured residents of Lamu West that his government will continue delivering development across key sectors such as agriculture, education, and road infrastructure.
