FISHING COMPETITION LAUNCHED AT KIWAYU FESTIVALS
Deputy Governor Dr. Mbarak Mohammed on Friday officially launched the much-anticipated Fishing Competition in Kiwayu, one of the flagship activities of the ongoing Kiwayu Festivals. The event brought together fishermen from across the island and neighboring villages, providing them with a platform to showcase their traditional skills and highlight the importance of fishing as a key economic activity in Lamu County.
Speaking during the launch, Dr. Mbarak commended the community for preserving its maritime heritage and emphasized the county government’s commitment to supporting initiatives that promote culture, tourism, and livelihoods. He noted that such competitions not only strengthen unity among residents but also attract visitors, boosting the local economy.
The Fishing Competition adds to a rich lineup of activities in the Kiwayu Festivals, which include dhow races, donkey races, beach soccer, swimming contests, and cultural performances, all celebrating the island’s vibrant traditions.
