LAMU MAKES HISTORY WITH FIRST-EVER EDIBLE OIL PROCESSING MACHINE
Lamu has achieved a groundbreaking milestone with the arrival of the first-ever Edible Oil Processing Machine at Mpeketoni ATC. The machine, a joint effort between the County Government of Lamu and the Nuts and Oil Crops Directorate (AFA), places Lamu at the forefront of agricultural value addition, opening new opportunities for farmers, boosting local production, and marking a major step towards food security and economic growth.
The machine will process sunflower, simsim, and peanuts through pressing, purification, packaging, and branding — enabling farmers to add value to their produce. With a capacity of 5 tonnes per day, this innovation represents a huge leap forward from the previous 500kgs daily output. Importantly, the production of affordable, locally made edible oil will also help reduce the cost of living for Lamu residents.
Hon. Gichu, CECM Agriculture, urged farmers to seize this opportunity, saying:
“This machine is a game-changer for our farmers. With the capacity to process up to five tonnes daily, we now have the ability to add real value to sunflower, simsim, and peanuts grown here in Lamu. I urge our farmers to take advantage of this opportunity by planting more oil crops, so that together we can maximize production and increase incomes.”
He further thanked the Nuts and Oil Crops Directorate (AFA) for their support and applauded H.E. Governor Issa Timamy for his tireless efforts in empowering farmers and transforming agriculture in the county.
Present at the event were representatives from the Nuts and Oil Crops Directorate (AFA), Madam Ann Gikonyo, Agriculture CECM Hon. Gichu, as well as the Bahari and Hongwe Ward Administrators.
The installation of this machine reflects Governor Issa Timamy’s unwavering commitment to supporting farmers, enhancing agricultural value addition, reducing the cost of living, and driving Lamu towards food security and economic empowerment.
