LAMU COUNTY TRIUMPH DURING THIS YEAR’S TRAILBLAZER AWARDS

County Government of Lamu staff has been feted during this year’s Trailblazers awards by President William Samoei Ruto, C.G.H. at the 2024 International Women Celebration hosted by the Ministry of Gender, Culture, Arts, and Heritage in Embu County.

Director Disaster Management and Peace Building, Mr. Shee Kupi was honored in the Peace and Security category specifically on Women empowerment on peace and security where his efforts were acknowledged towards advancing Peace and Security for women and Girls through various initiativess and interventions that have fostered trust and reduced conflicts along the Kenya – Somalia Border.

Speaking after receiving the award, Mr. Kupi dedicated the award to conflict zone communities for their unrelenting support towards peace restoration and further thanked Governor Issa Timamy for supporting various interventions geared towards serving and saving women and children especially the vulnerables living in conflict zone.

He further thanked partners in the Peace building and conflict management framework moreso USAID Kuza who supported the County Government Peace legislations that had specific clauses touching on women empowerment, and UNwomen who trained our Women and ensured a seamless mediation sessions cordinated, presided and led by Women.

ETHIOPIAN DELEGATION VISITS GOVERNOR TIMAMY

Earlier today, Governor Issa Timamy EGH, OGW hosted a delegation from Ethiopia Maritime Authority at his Mokowe Governor’s office to discuss on the shipment of fertilizer cargo destined for Ethiopia, which will soon be called through the Port of Lamu.

The team was led by the LAPSSET leadership, among them, Chairman of the Authority Hon.Ali Mbogo, CEO, Mr. Stephen Ikua, Lamu Port General Manager, Eng. Vincent Sidai of KPA, and the LAPSSET Regional Manager Mr. Salim Bunu.

The visit comes at the backdrop of an earlier meeting between Kenyan and Ethiopian agencies that was held in Ethiopia, where it was agreed to institute a joint coordination and monitoring of the LAPSSET Corridor among the involved government agencies. Lamu Governor and ANC Party Leader, assured the delegation of his full support towards the realization of LAPSSET full potential as an economic game-changer for Lamu County.

The Council of Governor’s Blue Economy Committee Chair also promised to give Ethiopia delegation land to set up their logistics hub within the county.

In attendance was County Secretary Am Ali Abbas, CoS Mr. Abdulnasir Issa and FCDC CEO Dr.Idle Farah.

BRITISH HIGH COMMISSIONER TOURS KING FAHD HOSPITAL.

H.E Governor Timamy hosted the British High Commissioner Amb. Neil Wigan and his team at King Fahd referral hospital in Lamu island on Friday.

The visit focussed on the facility’s preparedness towards emergency response and mass casualty incidents.

Governor Timamy appreciated the High Commissioner for choosing to visit and collaborate with Lamu, and took the opportunity to raise other areas of interest between the two parties including the education and water sectors.

CECM Dr. Mbarak Bahjaj and his team took the team through all departments of concern and later made a presentation to highlight the county and facility level emergency response structures.

Ambassador Wigan also acknowledged the support by British High Commission on capacity-building towards emergency response in Lamu County.

The duo also discussed other areas of possible collaboration and support in the health sector.

Also present were the County secretary Amb. Abbas, Chief Officer Dr. Tole, Chief of Staff Mr. Abdulnasir Issa and King Fahd board members led by the Chair Hon. Amina Kale, among others.

Deputy Governor Raphael Munyua leading public participation exercise on restoration of Lake Kenyatta.

The exercise that’s geared towards restoring the water tower allowed citizens to give their views on the proposed demarcation and gazettement of the riverine areas in Mugumpini, Zebra, Sinambio, and Mwangaza areas.

LAPSSET LEADERSHIP PAYS A COURTESY CALL ON GOVERNOR TIMAMY TO DISCUSS OPERATIONALIZATION OF LAMU PORT

LAPSSET Director General, Mr. Stephen Ikua, LAPSSET Regional Manager, Mr. Salim Bunu and LAPSSET Chairman Hon. Ali Mbogo paid a courtesy call to Lamu County Governor Issa Timamy EGH, OGW on Wednesday at his office in Mokowe.

The meeting delved on operationalization of Lamu Port and the Governor’s efforts in ensuring Ethiopian business plans to import fertilizer through the Port of Lamu and transporting it through the LAPSSET corridor is fruitful.

The meeting also focused on various issues concerning LAPSSET and the significant benefits that the LAPSSET corridor and the Port will bring in transforming the counties that transverse the LAPSSET corridor.

They also discussed on the upcoming visit of the British High Commissioner to Kenya, Neil Wigan, who visited the LAPSSET Development Authority site this afternoon.

HISTORIC MOMENT AS LAMU COMMISSIONS IT’S FIRST CASHEW NUT FACTORY

British High Commission to Kenya Ambassador Neil Wigan together with his host Lamu Governor Issa Timamy EGH, OGW have today announced the commencement of the construction of a cashew nut processing factory in Hindi. This will be the first factory to be set up in Lamu County.

The plant will be constructed by Equitorial Nuts, a private investor, and is expected to be completed this year.

Speaking during the official ground break exercise, Ambassador Wigan congratulated Governor Timamy for his commitment towards adopting devising measures that encourage creation of added value in the cashewnut sector and by encouraging the private sector to invest in Lamu.

Ambassador Wigan also noted that the British Government through SUED (Sustainable Urban Economic Development) would continue partnering with Lamu towards opening up more opportunities with an aim of attracting investment for critical infrastructure and value chain projects.

Lamu Governor Issa Timamy noted that the project would greatly solve the unemployment issue and further urged the investor to prioritise locals during employment and told locals to take advantage of available opportunities and run with them.

“My Administration will continue wooing investors to the county by giving them incentives to invest in Lamu. Besides the cashewnut plant, my administration has recently signed a deal for the construction of a cotton ginery in Bahari ward that will significantly unlock the economic potential of Lamu county” said the Governor.

The Governor also promised the investor that he would not run short of raw material since Lamu accounts for 40% of cashewnuts and this year the county will give 16,000 cashewnut hybrid seeds to farmers which will in turn boost cashewnut production.

Equatorial Nut Processors Limited Chairman Dr. Peter K. Munga, EGH thanked Governor Timamy for giving him an opportunity to invest in Lamu and he commited to employ atleast 1,000 locals.

He further noted that Equitorial Nuts has been buying cashewnut from Lamu for over two decades and their physical establishment in Lamu will be a game changer towards economic empowerment within the county and the coastal strip.

In attendance was Lamu Deputy Governor Raphael Munyua, Amb. Ali Abbas, CECMs, Lamu Municipality Chairman Abdalla Fadhil, Chief Officers, CoS Mr. Abdulnasir Issa, Acting County Commissioners, SUED and UK Embassy representatives, cashewnut farmers among others.

Lamu County KISIP 2 Coordinating team has today led a number of bidders for pre tender site visits to Matondoni Informal Settlements.

The team led by Engineers from Lamu Municipality Eng. Abduswamad Hussein and Eng. Salim Suleiman together with the Settlement Executive Committee (SEC) and the Grievances Redress Committee (GRC) spearheaded a pre tender site visit.

Over 15 bidders had the opportunity to familiarize with site and the scope of the ground work ahead of the exercise.

The project is funded by the World Bank under the Kenya Informal Settlement Improvement Project (KISIP 2) in conjunction with the State Department of Housing and the County Government of Lamu.

In attendance was Matondoni Chief, Ruhia Shee and his assistant Ali Omar.

BEEFING UP SECURITY & OPENING UP OF TABASAMU – WIDHO SECURITY ROAD

The County Government of Lamu under the stewardship of Governor Issa Timamy has completed the first phase of Widho-Tabasamu security earth road.

The security road which has incorporated a security camp at Salama, will be instrumental towards beefing up security along Mkunumbi, Marafa, Juhudi, Salama and Widho road which now awaits grading.

Lamu Governor Issa Timamy EGH,OGW has thanked the security forces for their cooperation towards ensuring the establishment of the 15 kilometers earth road that will allow security forces to undertake their operations with ease and timely response.

The road is expected to be completed by April 2024.
