GOVERNOR TIMAMY COMMlSSIONS SEARCH & RESCUE OPERATIONS TEAM & RESCUE BOATS

The Department of Public Health, led by CECM Health Dr. Mbarak Bahjaj, convened a multi-agency stakeholders’ meeting in Mpeketoni Town to address the growing concerns over the stormwater drainage system’s blockage.

The drainage system has recently posed significant health and environmental risks, with routine maintenance becoming increasingly challenging.

Following a comprehensive inspection of the area, the multi-agency team discovered that several business premises and nearby homes were discharging wastewater into the drains, contrary to their intended function.

During the site tour, the team also observed significant waste accumulation, including food debris and plastics, which has led to the blockage, clogging, and stagnation of wastewater.

This has resulted in a foul odor, the breeding of mosquitoes, and heightened risks of hygiene-related diseases such as cholera and dysentery.

Furthermore, the encroachment of road reserves and stormwater drains has hampered efforts to clean and maintain the system.

To address the issue, all stakeholders agreed to adopt a multidisciplinary approach, including stronger law enforcement, to resolve the drainage blockage and improve public health and sanitation.

The meeting was attended by the Area MCA Hon. Francis Gakonga, Chief Officer of Trade Md. Joyce Murimi, Chief Officer of Devolution Mr. Kassim Mohamed, as well as local police officials, including the Area OCS and AP Commander.
