COUNTY GOVERNMENT OF LAMU IN PARTNERSHIP WITH GLOBAL FUND/AMREF LAUNCHES OXYGEN PLANT AT MPEKETONI SUB-COUNTY HOSPITAL
County Government of Lamu in partnership with Global Fund through Amref Africa in Kenya on Wednesday commissioned the construction of an oxygen processing plant at Mpeketoni Sub-county hospital in Lamu West sub-county.
Speaking after the ground breaking ceremony, Lamu County Government Chief of Staff Mr. Abdulnasir Issa who was representing Governor Issa Timamy EGH, OGW, said this is a step towards strengthening the healthcare system to enable Lamu residents to lead prosperous fulfilling lives.
Mr. Abdulnasir noted the plant which will be completed by early next year will address oxygen shortage at the hospital which relied for supply from Mombasa. The plant will also save the County Government of Lamu Sh. 10 million annually which is spent on procurement of oxygen from BOC Mombasa, a leading supplier of industrial, medical and special gases in East Africa.
“This oxygen plant is a fulfilment and commitment from Governor Issa Timamy to support and strengthen county’s health care system and the expand it’s primary healthcare goals which are geared towards improving health outcomes for Lamu residents so that they can lead prosperous fulfilling lives.” said the Chief of Staff.
Bahari Ward MCA Hon. Gakonga, Mkunumbi ward MCA Hon. Kimani, Hongwe Ward MCA Hon. Mburu and nominated MCA Hon. Hope Mwaura thanked Governor Timamy’s initiative for setting up an oxygen plant in Mpeketoni and emphasized it will transform medical services to thousands of people from Hongwe, Witu and Mkunumbi ward who visit the hospital for treatment.
In attendance was Amref Health Africa in Kenya representative Dr. George Githuka, Dr. Tom from the Ministry of Health Medical Services Chief Officer Dr. Victor Tole, Bahari Ward Administrator, Mpeketoni Sub-county hospital board members among others.
