GOVERNOR ISSA TIMMAY ADDRESSES INAUGURAL SITTING OF THE 3RD LAMU COUNTY ASSEMBLY

Lamu Governor H.E Timamy has this morning officially opened the Third Lamu County Assembly and addressed the house on his Administration key areas of focus and engagement for the next five years.
This is in accordance with standing Order No 17(1) provides that; The governor shall address the opening of each newly elected county assembly.

The Governor who was accompanied by his Deputy Hon. Raphael Munyua was received by the County Assembly leadership led by the Speaker Hon. Azhar Ali Mbarak , Deputy Speaker Hon. Paul Kimani and the Clerk Hon. Omar Ahmed Ali.

In his address, the Governor outlined his 9-point agenda that will enable his government achieve the strategy to realize aspirations of the Lamu people. They include;

  1. Digitization of local revenue to seal leakages and enhancement of revenue collection.
  2. Affordable and accessible health services across the county. This will include equipping of hospitals, recruitment of health practitioners, universal health care programme and infrastructure development.
  3. Improved water services and connections across the county. The government will procure water boozers for water supply in areas that have no water, service all existing desalination plants, sinking more boreholes.
  4. Education. Ensure we have quality grades and favorable learning conditions in the county. The county will invest in Infrastructure development, recruitment of teachers and provision of learning materials. The county will also introduce common county wide exams and continue awarding scholarships and bursaries to qualified and needy students on merit.
  5. Agriculture.
    As the key driver of our economy, the county government of Lamu will rehabilitate and roll out the tractor services to enhance farm mechanization. This year the county will give farmers free planting seeds, ensure availability of fertilizer and recruit agricultural extension officers. More so the county will support nuts farmers, introduce irrigation projects in all wards and initiate farmers training programmes.
  6. Tourism
    Lamu is a world heritage site and the county government will support the sector to become a solid economic earner. Towards achieving this; the county shall embark on training guide operators, promoting Lamu as an island of festivals.
  7. Livestock and Fisheries
    The county will revamp the sector by allocating adequate resources towards this sector. The county shall rely on the fisheries act that was passed by the first assembly to support the fishing industry. In livestock, the county will rehabilitate and operationalize all cattle dips, acquire veterinary drugs and vaccines to support livestock farmers. Support Cooperatives to assist farmers in marketing their produce and promoting Nagele livestock market to tap into the recent Oman livestock export opportunity.
  8. Information Communications and Technology (ICT)
    The county shall accelerate ICT infrastructure and capacities. Already Lamu island and Mpeketoni are connected with internet and this will be replicated in Faza, Kiunga, Shella, Mokowe, Hindi, Hongwe and Witu. The county will also renovate and reintroduce ICT centers that will give people access to information and research.
  9. Social Welfare and Sports
    County Government will increase women, youth and PWD fund. The county will further propose to amend the fund policy to allow the county to give interest free loans. Fighting drug abuse will remain a priory to the county. In sports the county shall invest in infrastructure and reintroduce the Governors cup competition.

The Governor further expressed his desire in fostering an accountable and transparent administration that will always consider input from the people of Lamu. “I want to assure you of my continued commitment towards a securing better future for Lamu County. Even when we are facing drought and many other challenges, my goal is to see a prosperous Lamu at peace with itself with a good quality of life” Governor Timamy said.

While addressing the House the Governor underscored the need for the Assembly and the Executive to embrace unity of purpose so that they can develop Lamu county. He pointed out that his Government will create an enabling environment that will facilitate the people to become the engine and centre of development.

“As elected leaders our singular objective should be to improve the lives of the Lamu residents. If we unite towards this singular call, then we can serve our people with equity, social justice and always remain to be responsive to their needs”

The Governor also called on Lamu County Assembly Hon. Members to hasten the process of approving the Supplementary budget that will soon be tabled before the House; inorder to enhance the implementation of various projects.
He also congratulated the Speaker and Members of the County Assembly for making it and wished them all the best as they discharge their mandate.

The Governor was also accompanied by his Chief Of Staff Mr. Abdulnassir M. Issa, County Executive Committee and County Secretary Mr. John Mburu.
