GOVERNOR TIMAMY LAUNCHES BEEKEEPING PROJECT IN HONGWE

Governor Issa Timamy has launched a beekeeping project by the Hongwe Boda Boda Self-Help Group in Lamu West, aimed at improving livelihoods and nutrition through honey production.

The initiative is funded by the Kenya Marine Fisheries and Socio-Economic Development (KEMFSED) program in partnership with the County Government of Lamu. The project received a grant of KSh 1.2 million, with members contributing KSh 257,600, bringing the total budget to KSh 1.45 million.

The 15-member group has already acquired modern beehives, protective bee suits, and honey processing equipment. Members are also undergoing training in apiculture, processing, and business management to ensure sustainability.

Governor Timamy noted that in Lamu West alone, eight community groups have been funded with over KSh 13 million under KEMFSED, highlighting the program’s role in job creation and economic empowerment.

He praised the Hongwe initiative, saying it will boost incomes, create jobs, and supply high-quality honey to local and regional markets. Future plans include expanding the apiary and producing value-added products such as beeswax candles and propolis.

The Governor was accompanied by his Deputy Dr. Mbarak Mohamed, County CECMs, Chief Officers, County Secretary Amb. Ali Abbas, CoS Mr. Abdulnassir Issa among other county top officials
