PARLIAMENTARY ENERGY COMMITTEE PAYS COURTESY CALL TO GOVERNOR TIMAMY AHEAD OF PUBLIC PARTICIPATION IN LAMU
The Parliamentary Energy Committee on Wednesday paid a courtesy call to Lamu Governor Issa Timamy as part of ongoing public participation on proposed changes to the national oil development plan. The meeting was held ahead of a scheduled public forum with residents at the Mokowe Maritime Centre, where the Committee is expected to engage citizens directly.
The engagement brought together Members of the Committee and the County Executive to discuss key issues affecting Lamu County, with a major focus on collecting citizens’ views on the proposed re-routing of the LAPSSET crude oil pipeline from the original Lokichar–Lamu corridor to an alternative route terminating in Mombasa.
Governor Timamy emphasized that Lamu’s port development must be supported by critical infrastructure, noting that it is not viable to have a functional port without an oil pipeline and a refinery. He stated that there are already investors willing to invest in Lamu, provided an oil pipeline is established.
The Governor further reiterated that Lamu Port is envisioned as a major transshipment hub serving regional and international markets, and called for meaningful public participation to safeguard the county’s long-term economic interests.
