NEPAD/APRM CONDUCTS A SUCCESSFUL CAPACITY-BUILDING INITIATIVE ON THE COUNTY PEER REVIEW MECHANISM IN LAMU COUNTY

Lamu County Executive Committee Members, Chief Officers and Directors on Friday concluded a two-day capacity-building initiative that was organized by NEPAD/APRM on the County Peer Review Mechanism (CPRM) in the county.

The capacity building exercise held at the Mokowe Command Center was geared to create awareness of the CPRM initiative amongst officials of the Further, the initiative will facilitate experience sharing, identify challenges, build capacity to entrench policies and standards that will accelerate good governance in the county as well as make service delivery more effective and efficient.

This initiative reflects Governor Issa Timamy’s administration’s commitment to the implementation of good governance initiatives in the devolved system of government by building up on practices that fully recognize the need to accelerate development and economic growth and by ensuring adequate and effective service delivery mechanisms are in place.

During the opening of the session led by Mr. Owanga Sebastian Aduong’a. C.E.C.M – Education, remarked on the importance of the initiative to the County and how the CPRM self-assessment will enable the County to improve its service delivery. Thereafter, he welcomed the Chief Executive Officer, Amb. Dr. Samori Okwiya gave his remarks where he applauded the County Government for showing leadership in acknowledging and accepting to undertake this capacity-building initiative.

The CEO remarked that the CPRM process will enable the county to improve its good governance approach by learning about various practices undertaken on such initiatives by other counties as well as build up on the progress made.

The capacity building exercise which was also attended by Lamu County Secretary Amb. Ali Abbas concluded with a simulation exercise that will ensure that the county is prepared enough to undertake the CPRM self-assessment exercise.

MPEKETONI SUB-COUNTY HOSPITAL LAUNCHES NEW PRIVATE & SEMI-PRIVATE WARDS, DIALYSIS UNIT & A DENTAL UNIT

Lamu County Governor Issa Timamy EGH, OGW on Saturday commissioned Mpeketoni subcounty hospital male and female wards in memory of the the late Lamu Deputy Governor H.E Raphael Munyua who passed away on 6th September 2024.

According to Governor Timamy, the ward was dedicated to his former Deputy who served as the third Deputy Governor of Lamu for his leadership, vision and commitment to the health and well-being of the people of Lamu.

Towards improving the health services in Lamu, the Governor also commissioned the first ever new dialysis unit that has four dialysis machines a dental unit that will conduct multiple dental procedures such as fillings and root canals, a new dedicated 315 KVA transformer that will upgrade the electricity supply and capacity.

The facility also unveiled it’s newly renovated radiology unit and a new ultrasound machine.

H.E The Governor further reiterated his commitment to transform the health sector and improve the welfare of health workers to ensure residents have access to affordable and quality health services.

GOVERNOR TIMAMY ISSUES SH. 55.8 MILLION IN SCHOLARSHIPS & BURSARIES

Lamu County Governor Issa Timamy on Friday awarded bursaries and scholarships worth over Ksh. 55 million to 7,357 needy but bright students from Lamu County.

The Sh. 55,899,525 will be shared among 7,357 secondary school students with 2,180 students receiving full scholarships and 5,177 being awarded bursaries respectively. According to Governor Timamy Sh.38,060,595 will be absorbed within the county schools.

“My administration remains committed to addressing the financial challenges faced by students to ensure that they can pursue their academic aspirations with greater ease and focus. Thus bursaries and scholarships aim at uplifting the lives of those students who need financial support from Lamu, giving hope to the hopeless and supporting the dreams of the future generation in our beloved County.” Said Governor Timamy.

Bursaries and Scholarships were introduced by Governor Timamy during his first tenure in the year 2014.

The Governor further emphasized that the procedure was fair and transparent and committed to publishing the names of all beneficiaries for accountability and transparency. The County boss further added that there will be common exams for form one to form three students that are sponsored by the County Government to ensure all students sit for fair and equal exams. He further called upon members of Parliament who have a bursary kitty to make public the list of their beneficiaries for transparency and public confidence.

In his remarks, Education CECM Hon. Sebastian Owanga noted that by facilitating access to educational funds, the county is demonstrating a dedication to nurturing talent and fostering academic excellence within the community.

Bursary and Scholarship Board Chair Mr. Athman Badi said as a board they were honored to be part of this initiative, which underscores our shared values and commitment to promoting education in Lamu.

In attendance were Lamu County Commissioner Mr. Wesly Koech, Chief of Staff Mr. Abdulnasir Issa, Education Chief Officer Ms. Hafswa Difini, Principals from all Lamu County Secondary schools, BOM/PTA representatives, TSC representatives among others.

LAMU LAUNCHES MULTI-MILLION OXYGEN PLANT IN FAZA TO SAVE COUNTY OVER 10 MILLION ANNUALLY

A multi-million oxygen processing plant has been launched at Faza hospital a development project that’s a big milestone in the provision of quality health care in Lamu East Sub-county.

The construction of the plant which is being financed by the Global Fund and Amref Health Africa in Kenya in partnership with the County Government of Lamu will process enough oxygen for patients in the facility and shared with nearby health facilities.

Speaking during the ground breaking ceremony in Faza, Lamu Coumty Government Chief of Staff Mr. Abdulnasir Issa who was representing Governor Issa Timamy EGH, OGW said working with partners is strategy of the County to attract support and augment the county’s investment in building health systems in the Lamu County.

“This ground breaking ceremony for the oxygen plant in Faza today supports Governor Timamy’s pledge of delivering quality healthcare services at the residents doorstep and cuts on travels to seek for critical medical services from other referral hospitals” stated the Chief of Staff

The Chief of Staff further noted that Governor Timamy’s administration has been keen on hiring more health workers, improving health infrastructure and equipping health facilities across the county to a state that can serve the community better.

Medical Services Chief Officer Dr. Victor Tole said this is a step towards strengthening the county’s healthcare system to enable Lamu residents to lead prosperous fulfilling lives. He further added that the plant will go a long way in addressing most of the current challenges in hauling oxygen all the way from Mombasa.

COUNTY GOVERNMENT OF LAMU IN PARTNERSHIP WITH GLOBAL FUND/AMREF LAUNCHES OXYGEN PLANT AT MPEKETONI SUB-COUNTY HOSPITAL

County Government of Lamu in partnership with Global Fund through Amref Africa in Kenya on Wednesday commissioned the construction of an oxygen processing plant at Mpeketoni Sub-county hospital in Lamu West sub-county.

Speaking after the ground breaking ceremony, Lamu County Government Chief of Staff Mr. Abdulnasir Issa who was representing Governor Issa Timamy EGH, OGW, said this is a step towards strengthening the healthcare system to enable Lamu residents to lead prosperous fulfilling lives.

Mr. Abdulnasir noted the plant which will be completed by early next year will address oxygen shortage at the hospital which relied for supply from Mombasa. The plant will also save the County Government of Lamu Sh. 10 million annually which is spent on procurement of oxygen from BOC Mombasa, a leading supplier of industrial, medical and special gases in East Africa.

“This oxygen plant is a fulfilment and commitment from Governor Issa Timamy to support and strengthen county’s health care system and the expand it’s primary healthcare goals which are geared towards improving health outcomes for Lamu residents so that they can lead prosperous fulfilling lives.” said the Chief of Staff.

Bahari Ward MCA Hon. Gakonga, Mkunumbi ward MCA Hon. Kimani, Hongwe Ward MCA Hon. Mburu and nominated MCA Hon. Hope Mwaura thanked Governor Timamy’s initiative for setting up an oxygen plant in Mpeketoni and emphasized it will transform medical services to thousands of people from Hongwe, Witu and Mkunumbi ward who visit the hospital for treatment.

LAMU EMERGENCY OPERATION CENTER RECEIVES A BOOST TOWARDS MANAGING DISASTER IN THE COUNTY

Global Implementation Solution through CDC on Tuesday donated office equipment to County Government of Lamu Emergency Operation Center in a bid to boost it’s operations in building resilience and managing disaster across the county.

The center which focuses on safeguarding lives within the County, given the prevalence of emergencies such as road accidents, fires, floods, droughts, and human-wildlife conflicts recieved office stationery, television set, computers and laptops that will play a positive role in mitigating disasters swiftly, ensure seamless communication and offer real-time data analysis.

While receiving the donation on behalf of Governor Issa Timamy EGH, OGW, County Chief of Staff Mr. Abdulnasir Issa expressed profound gratitude to Global Implementation Solution for their steadfast support towards ensuring the center is able to coordinate and respond to disasters within the county.

The donation which focuses on supporting the center with infrastructure and ICT was delivered by GIS Head of Operations and Compliance Ms. Pauline Nyaga.

In attendance was CECM Finance Hon. Mohamed Mbwana, ICT Chief Officer Mr. Ali, Medical Services Chief Officer Dr. Tole, Disaster Chief Officer Mr Kasim, Director Public Health Mr. Mohamed Abubakar, EOC Manager Mr Iftikhar, among other county senior officials.

CELEBRATION AS WIYONI COMPREHENSIVE SCHOOL GETS A DESALINATION PLANT

Lamu Governor H.E Issa Timamy E.GH, O.G.W on Friday graced the official handover of Wiyoni Comprehensive secondary school desalination plant in an effort to ensure students have access to clean and safe water.

The plant was donated by Helping Hand organisation which is a non profit making entity in collaboration with the County Government of Lamu.

Speaking during the event, Governor Timamy thanked the organisation for the kind gesture and further noted that his administration believes safe water and sanitation should not be a privilege of only those who are rich or live in urban centers.

“My administration acknowledges this gesture and will continue partnering with like minded organisations to prioritize most basic requirements for human health like water in a bid to ensure every Lamu resident can access clean andsafe water.” added the Governor.

This initiative comes after Helping Hand donated another desalination plant in Mokowe.

Also in attendance was Lamu County Secretary Amb. Ali Abbas, Trade CECm Hon. Aisha Miraj, CoS Mr. Abdulnasir Issa, nominated MCA Hon. Medo and Helping Hand leadership led by Mr. Yunus.

Lamu County through MWARP engaged the borderland security Multiagency for a human right and peace building sessions.

Muslim women advancement of rights and protection im conjunction with NCIC and Lamu County Government held a consultative forum with Kiunga ward security Multiagency for a peace building and humanright advocacy training workshop that sought to stretghen the rights of community and atbthe same time foster peaceful coexitentence in the region.

The team were taken through the process, procedures and dynamics of human rights standard as a prerequisite for a peaceful engagement.

Kiunga ward community have born the brunt of rights violation and Pain of insufficient provision of critical services which is seen as a potential source of conflict given its geographical locations amd proximity to somalia.

The facilitators who were drawn from MWARP, NCIC amd lamu county directorate of peace building saw the need to orient the security agents through this reality and capacitate them to deal with these predicament as duty bearers.

The engagement was also meant to stretghen trust, foster cooperation and seal any available loophole that may jeopardise our intended Peaceful atmosphere in the border villages.

Deputy President H.E Rigathi Gachagua and Lamu Governor H.E Issa Timamy EGH, OGW among thousands of mourners that are currently attending the burial of Lamu Deputy Governor H.E Raphael Munyua at Mpeketoni, Lamu.

The Deputy Governor passed away on Friday 6th September 2024 at the Nairobi Hospital following a short illness.

May his soul Rest in Eternal Peace.

LAMU COUNTY THROUGH MWARP IS SET TO ACTIVATE AMANI CLUBS AT BORDERLAND SCHOOLS

The Muslim women advancement of right and protection (MWARP) in conjunction with NCIC and Lamu County Government have today rolled out the Induction/TOT workshop for all the Teachers in Kiunga Ward in strategic preparation for activation of Amani and rights Clubs in lamu county Schools.

The launch of this program in kiunga ward schools is timely and appropriate given the vulnerability of various conflicts witnessed in the entire region.

The program is set to orient school principals and partners on the purpose, vision, and structure of both Amani Clubs and Rights Clubs, highlighting their complementary roles in promoting peace, human rights, and civic engagement among students.

The program also seek to familiarize participants with the formation processes for both Amani and Rights Clubs, including membership criteria, leadership structures, and operational guidelines, ensuring proper setup and sustainability within schools.

The first of a kind initiative to have been launched in Lamu will enhance the understanding of how Amani and Rights Clubs can collaborate with external partners, civil society organizations, and local government stakeholders to enhance their impact on peace, security, and human rights advocacy within schools and the broader community.

The Program is in line with Governor Timamy’s strategy in promoting peace building and conflict management framework from all level of participation starting with school going children who are the most vulnerable when insecurity knocks.
