WEST POKOT DEPUTY GOVERNOR PAYS A COURTESY CALL ON LAMU GOVERNOR

West Pokot Deputy Governor Robert Komolle together with members of the West Pokot Executive on Tuesday morning paid a courtesy call on County Government of Lamu Governor’s Office at the County Headquarters in Mokowe.

The West Pokot delegation which is in Lamu for a 4 days benchmarking exercise on governance was received by Education CECM Hon. Sebastian Owanga and Chief of Staff Mr. Abdulnasir Issa.

Among the key areas that the County Officials are interested to learn from Lamu include; Disaster Response Management (DRM), Emergency Operation Center (EOC) and Geographic Information System (GIS).

During their working tour, the team will visit the County Assembly and the Lamu Port.

In attendance was Disaster Response Management Chief Officer Mr. Kassim Mohamed and DRM Director Mr. Mbarak.

WEST POKOT COUNTY BENCHMARKS ON LAMU’S DISASTER RESPONSE MANAGEMENT

In a collaboration aimed at developing Disaster Response Bill, West Pokot County Government has embarked on a benchmarking mission to the County Government of Lamu. Led by the West Pokot Deputy Governor Robert Komolle and County Executive Committee Members, the delegation sought to gain valuable insights from the Department of Disaster Response Management on how they developed their DRM Act as well as the disaster coordination at the Emergency Operation Center.

Speaking at Mokowe Emergency Operation Center on Tuesday afternoon, West Pokot Deputy Governor commended County Government of Lamu for it’s prudent management of resources, especially the setting up of Emergency Command Center which acts as a dispatch centre for the county’s multi agency Disaster Response Team.

“We came to Lamu after it was honored for it’s outstanding disaster response team. We have noted the remarkable achievements the county has made after developing their DRM Act and we are here to learn so that when we go back home to develop a West Pokot DRM bill” he said.

Speaking while representing Governor Issa Timamy, Education CECM Hon. Sebastian Owanga expressed the delegation and emphasized the importance of knowledge sharing and collaboration between the two counties.

The delegation that will be in Lamu for four days, will also tour Lamu’s Geographic Information System (GIS), County Assembly and the Lamu Port.

The team was hosted by the Office of the Governor led by Chief of Staff Mr. Abdulnasir Issa, Disaster Management Chief Officer Mr. Kassim Mohamed and Disaster Director Mr. Mbarak. Also in attendance was USAID-KUZA representative.

Takriban marefarii 30 waliochini ya umri wa miaka 35 Kutoka Kaunti ya Lamu, wanapokea mafunzo ya class 3 ya kuchezesha mpira wa miguu ili waweze kujiunga na wenzao waliohitimu kuchezesha ligi za majuu.

Mafunzo hayo ya wiki moja, yamedhaminiwa na serekali ya Kaunti ya Lamu, ambapo imeleta Refarii mkufunzi aliyehitimu na kuidhinishwa na Shirikisho la Soka duniani.

Akifungua Rasmi warsha hiyo, Waziri wa Michezo Sebastian Owanga, amesema wamefikia hatua hiyo, kufuatia ripoti ya diba lililochezwa la Talanta Hela, ambapo iliyoonyesha kwamba kuna dosari katika marefarii na wakufunzi wasoka Lamu.

Aidha Owanga, amesema mafunzo hayo yatasaidia kuenua kiwango cha mpira wa kabumbu Kaunti ya Lamu na hata kupunguza utumizi wa dawa za kulevya kwa vijana.

Waliokuwepo ni pamoja na Afisa mkuu wa Michezo Hafswa Difini, Mkurugenzi wa Michezo Peter Ndichu pamoja na Afisa wake Abubakar Basalama.

COASTAL COUNTIES TAKE A UNITED FRONT ON REVENUE SHARING FORMULA

Lamu Governor Issa Timamy and other Jumuiya Ya Kaunti Za Pwani – JKP Governors have unanimously agreed to have a unified position on CRAs 4th edition revenue sharing formula. This was agreed during Jumuiya ya County Za Pwani (JKP) Governor’s Summit and the 4th edition of the county revenue sharing formula held at Mombasa.

The summit was part of a progressive approach towards consolidating and charting a clear future for the coastal people with a shared prosperity agenda.

The Governor’s committed to remain steadfast in advocating for the interests of the region and have an equal share of resources to drive our counties’ development agenda forward.

Present were, H.E. Gideon Maitha Mung’aro, the JKP Chairman and Governor Kilifi County; H.E. Abdulswamad Shariff Nassir, Governor Mombasa County; H.E Dr Dhadho Godhana, Governor Tana River; H.E Governor Andrew Mwadime, Governor Taita Taveta, and H.E. Fatuma Achani- Governor Kwale County, represented by Hon. Bakari Sebe, CECM Finance and Economic Planning. Others present were County Secretaries led by Lamu CECM Amb. Ali Abbas, CECMs, CO’s among others.

The Summit was organised by the Jumuiya Economic Development Secretariat led by the CEO, Emmanuel Nzai.

LAMU COUNTY COMMEMORATES INTERNATIONAL DAY OF FOREST IN HINDI

Lamu County Government through the Department of Environment & Climate Change commemorated International Day of Forest 2024, in partnership with Kenya Forest Service at Hindi Prison.

The theme for this year’s event was “Forests and Innovation, New Solutions for a better world “

The event which graced Deputy Governor Raphael Munyua urged locals to conserve the forests and wetlands in order to sustain the livelihoods of the local communities and stabilise the environment whose deterioration he noted will be devastating to the country.

The UN General Assembly (UNGA) proclaimed 21 March as the International Day of Forests in 2012, a day to celebrate and raise awareness of the importance of all types of forests.

The event was supported by different stakeholders, Nature Kenya & The Nature Conservancy.

In attendance were Agriculture CECM Hon. Jimmy Gichuu, County Secretary Amb. Ali Abbas, Provincial Administration led by Lamu Central DCC Mr . Charles Kitheka, Environment Chief Officer Mr. Rashid Dirie, Representatives from Nature Kenya, Wetlands International, KEFRI, NEMA, NYS, Hindi Prison, local CBOs and the general public.

COUNTY CONDUCTS LAMU SEAFRONT BEAUTIFICATION PROJECT

County Government of Lamu has successfully conducted Lamu seafront beautification public participation that will be a treasure trove for tourists visiting the area, combining it’s beautiful scenery with relics of the islands rich history, and culture of its people.

Members of the public endorsed the project that will be implemented at King Fahd hospital seafront and will see the construction of the interior and open spaces including one restaurant, playground and a wooden bridge.

According to Governor Issa Timamy EGH, OGW who spearheaded the public participation exercise, the project shall be undertaken by the County Government of Lamu in partnership with UN Habitat.

Governor Timamy and ANC Party Leader said Lamu is a renowned tourism destination and would want to make it attractive for tourists. He said the programme is expected to be completed this year.

“I want to thank the residents of Lamu for endorsing this project, once the programme is completed, the true image of Lamu would be seen” he said.

In attendance was County Secretary Amb. Ali Abbas, CoS Mr. Abdulnasir Issa, MCA’s Hon. Shekhuna and his counterpart Hon. Medo, UN-Habitat representative, CECM Lands Hon. Tashrifa Bakari, CECM Hon. Mbarak Bahjaj and representatives from Go-Blue, KARA, and County Architect Mr. Omar Sagaf.

Lamu Governor Issa Timamy EGH, OGW together with other coastal Governor’s in a consultative meeting of the Jumuiya ya Kaunti za Pwani (JKP) in Mombasa County on Saturday.

The agenda of the meeting focused on revenue sharing among member counties, the progress of the Go Blue project, and strategies to enhance collaboration within our JKP bloc.

In attendance were governors: His Excellency Abdulswamad Shariff Nassir (Mombasa), His Excellency Dhadho Godhana (Tana River) and His Excellency Gideon Mung’aro (Kilifi)

KENTRADE BOARD OF DIRECTORS PAY A COURTESY CALL ON DEPUTY GOVERNOR RAPHAEL MUNYUA TO DISCUSS OPPORTUNITIES AND CHALLENGES FACING TRADE AND INVESTMENT IN LAMU COUNTY

Kenya Trade Network Agency (KenTrade) Board of Directors led by Chairman Basil Criticos and Chief Executive Officer Mr. David Ngarama on Thursday paid a courtesy call to Lamu County Deputy Governor Raphael Munyua at his office in Mokowe.

The meeting delved on collaborative efforts aimed at leveraging Lamu’s unique position to drive sustainable economic growth through trade and investment initiatives.

The meeting also focused on the importance of infrastructural development, particularly the ongoing LAPSSET corridor project, which promises to significantly boost trade and connectivity within the region.

They also discussed various sectors with high investment potential in Lamu, such as tourism, agriculture, fisheries and renewable energy.

LAMU WEST BAR OWNERS LAUD COUNTY GOVERNMENT EFFORTS TOWARDS REGULATION & LICENSING OF LIQUOR

Bar owners from Hongwe and Mkunumbi wards have committed to comply with the County Liquor Licensing and Regulations Act 2020, noting that compliance would enable them operate without being harassed by authorities.

The bar owners were speaking during a sensitization campaign that was organised by the Alcoholic Drinks Regulations committee at Hongwe.

The sensitization campaign was spearheaded by Liquor Director Mr. Khamis Kaviha who assured bar owners that the licensing process will be fair and transparent. He further noted that before licenses are issued the liquor committee will publish the list of all prospective applicants for residents to approve or disapprove an applicant who they feel their liquor outlet should not be licensed.

The bar owners were also grateful to Governor Issa Timamy for having unitiated the licensing process denoting that it would greatly contribute towards regulation of sale of alcohol.

LAMU COUNTY WINDS UP LIQUOR LICENSING SENSITIZATION CAMPAIGN IN HINDI

Lamu County Liquor Licensing and Regulation Board has today completed it’s week-long Lamu West Sub-county liquor sensitization campaign with meeting Hindi Ward bar owners.

The Board led by it’s Chair Mr. Kassim Athman and Director Kaviha Khamis, the board sensitized bar owners on the importance of compliance since it would greatly help eradicate sale of adulterated and second generation liquor.

According to the board, interested applicants should download an application form from the county website www.lamu.go.ke and thereafter submit a duly filled form through their respective ward administrator offices before 1st April 2024.

Bar owners thanked the Liqour Board and Governor Issa Timamy for their commitment towards ensuring the sale of alcohol is regulated within the county since it would protect legitimate sellers from police harassment as well as weed out unfair competition from vendors who sell adulterated alcohol.

Today, the board completed sensitization across the 7 wards in Lamu West and Central Sub-Counties.

In attendance was the board committee members, Hindi Ward MCA representative and Provincial Administration led by Lamu Central DCC Mr. Charles Kitheka.
