Lamu Governor H.E Issa Timamy EGH, OGW is expected to officially commission the new wing of Mpeketoni Sub-county hospital private and semi-private wards before the end of the year.

Speaking while inspecting the ongoing construction works at Mpeketoni Hospital, Health CECM Dr. Mbarak Bahjaj emphasized the importance of investing in healthcare infrastructure as a fundamental pillar of providing healthcare services to the people.

“The construction of the 19 semi-private and 4 private wards at this hospital reflects Governor Issa Timamy’s unwavering commitment to improving healthcare and ensuring that our people have access to essential medical services,” he stated.

“These facilities will not only expand our capacities to accommodate patients but will signify quality and dignified care for patients as well as providing specialized services that will address the critical gaps at the wards ” added the Dr. Bahjaj.

Towards this improvement, Governor Timamy has ensured the hospital has a dedicated transformer and a standby power back up generator to guarantee effective and efficient service delivery.

Lamu West sub-county residents are set to benefit immensely from improved health care once the new Mpeketoni Sub-county hospital wing is commissioned.

The expansion is being undertaken by the County Government of Lamu through the Department of Health and will tremendously transform the facility into a leading hospital offering integrated health care services for the people it serves.

Speaking while inspecting the ongoing construction works at the old Mpeketoni Hospital, Health CECM Dr. Mbarak Bahjaj noted that the upgrading of the building which is 70% complete will harbour Integrated Infectious Diseases Unit, Comprehensive Care Unit and Corporate Outpatient Unit and is expected to ease pressure at the facility and other health centres within the County.

“We are optimistic that by early October, the public will start enjoying improved services and will no longer be required to travel for miles to seek medical services at private facilities as well as outside the county” Dr. Bahjaj noted.

The CECM, who was accompanied Health Chief Officer Dr. Victor Tole, also committed to ensure the Health Department continues to bring specialised health care services closer to mwananchi which is in line with H.E. Governor Issa Timamy EGH, OGW health care pillar.

The CECM also inspected the ongoing construction of a kitchen and a store as well as the newly installed laundry machines. The expansion will go a long way towards ensuring seamless service delivery at the facility which currently serves over 3,000 inpatients and over 38,000 outpatients annually

It is a sigh of relief to Lamu west sub county residents following the revamping of Mpeketoni morgue that will ensure residents are guaranteed their loved ones who pass on are preserved with dignity.

According to Health CECM who was inspecting the facility the mortuary which had no cold rooms for over 9 years, has been installed with a 12 body cold room capacity and will ensure bodies are stored with dignity awaiting final send off.

Dr. Bahjaj was accompanied by Health Chief Officer Dr. Victor Tole and medical practitioners on a mission to inspect different projects undertaken by the Department.

Lamu Governor Issa Timamy EGH, OGW on Friday joined President William Ruto at the issuance of Sh1.7 billion grants to 612 fishing groups drawn from Mombasa, Tana River, Kwale, Lamu and Kilifi Counties.

Other Governor’s present were Abdullswamad Nassir (Mombasa), Fatuma Achani (Kwale), Godhana Dhadho (Tana River), MPs and MCAs.

Lamu County has hosted the first Kenya Redcross First aid contest that was held on 29th July at Mkunguni Cultural Hetitage Square, Amu island

The humanitarian organized event attracted different categories of participants as follows:

1. College and Universities

2. Red Cross Action Team

3. Persons Living with Disabilities

4. Junior Secondaries

5. High schools, 6.Primary Schools

7. EMTs

The auspicious event that was last held over a decade ago, attracted over 500 community members. Different teams showcased their first aid skills with great zeal and thrill that left the crowd assured of their safety when an emergency arises.

Lamu Governor Issa Timamy EGzh, OGW siaid Lamu was proud to have hosted the Regional First Aid Competition cordinated by Kenya Redcross that brought together schools, colleges, Universities& corporates from 6 Coastal Counties.The Governor termed the choice of Lamu County as a host was a clear testimony of our Capacity, commitment and professionalism to Disaster risk management framework as spearheaded by the Governors’s Office through the Directorate of disaster management under EOC Unit.

Lamu County Government will continue this initiative of engaging our youth and children in the disaster risk reduction programmes with belief that children are the agents of change in DRR to their both schools and localities.

In a ceremony filled with pride and accomplishment, 88 workers in the tourism and hospitality sector have graduated at the Lamu Vocational Training Centre following the completion of a 9-day upskilling training program.

The training which was sponsored by the Tourism Fund in collaboration with the Kenya Coast National Polytechnic (KCNP) aimed to enhance the skills and knowledge of participants to better serve the tourism and hospitality sectors in the region, which are vital components of Lamu’s economy.

During the graduation, Lamu Deputy Governor H.E Raphael Munyua praised the graduates for their commitment and hard work, highlighting the importance of continuous professional development in maintaining the competitiveness and quality of services in Lamu’s tourism industry.

Residents of Lamu County have been asked to maintain high level of hygiene and immediately report cases or symptoms of cholera to the nearest health center, inorder to control further spread of the disease.

According to Health Promotion Officer, Muhsin Mohamed, more than 50 People’s have been confirmed to have been affected by cholera in Witu ward.

Two people one from Witu town and another from Kipini have so far lost their lives as a result of cholera outbreak.

“We encourage all Lamu residents to ensure that the water they use is safe as well as to store food well to avoid contermination”, Mohamed appealed.

County Government of Lamu in partnership with Safaricom Foundation has officially opened a new Maternity and Newborn Unit at Mokowe hospital that will be critical towards addressing maternal and newborn health emergencies so as to improve healthcare services in the county.

The facility was launched on Friday by Governor Issa Timamy EGH, OGW together with Safaricom Foundation Chairman Mr. Joe Ogutu.

“We are grateful to Safaricom Foundation for partnering with us to save the lives of women and children in our county and we believe through this engagement health services will get better and we will secure the future of our children,” said Lamu Governor.

Safaricom Foundation Chairman said the facility will ensure effective and quality health services to targeted people. He further added that the facility will greatly reduce the delay in seeking maternal health services and the delay of women receiving care.

Also present was Lamu Deputy Governor Raphael Munyua, CECM’s, CO’s, Directors, MCAs, Development partners and residents of Mokowe.

Lamu county has for the first time ever in history conducted a successful hip replacement and spine surgery at the newly opened Mokowe orthopedics and trauma unit.

This is part of the County Government of Lamu initiative to continuously invest in the health department and ensure residents have access to quality medical services.

The state-of-the-art facility that was opened on Friday by Governor Issa Timamy EGH, OGW takes the county’s medical care a notch higher by offering a full spectrum of specialized services for which residents would earlier be referred to facilities outside the county.

Patients who underwent successful screening will undergo free complex bone and joint surgeries like spine surgery, hip and knee replacement as well as open fixation of fractures. These operations will be undertaken by 38 medical doctors at the facility that hosts in-patient services including common general illnesses and fracture management.

The Governor vowed to ensure that local residents, investors and visitors get the best medical services without having to travel outside the county’s borders.
